Leslieville Homes, Toronto

Leslieville has many enclaves of late Victorian and Edwardian period homes These Edwardian row houses were most likely  the first homes of the middle class workers from the many surrounding mills, foundries  and local manufacturing plants. The Bay-and-Gable style was quiet popular style of home in the Toronto and many variations of this style can be found in the Leslieville area .

An other charming Leslieville home , these small two bedroom homes  would origanlly had cedar shingles and natural wood through out the house. Some escaped the change in taste in the 50's that had all the wood painted over are really breath taking. Some residents are restoring the homes too how they originally looked.

This Edwardian home embraced the modern age for its time going with a flat roof and very industrial looking second story windows and brick work "eye brows" and roof line.    The arched front window and with wonderful stained glass dormers state that even though it is industrial looking this is still a home.

Another Victorian row house in Leslieville , A north England or Scottish type of style with a  very restrained and utilitarian look. The lines are very neat with out any flourishes or decoration, this is left to the brickwork arches above the door and window and the weave patterned at the roof peak. The arched front window and the addition of stained glass in the dormers with the tall second floor windows ads to the feeling of space and light in the interior.

These small houses in Leslieville always held a charm for me.I imagine the small houses such as these  were peoples first homes, Working at the nearby industrial plants at Carlaw Ave or the foundries and refineries along Eastern. Buying these small starter homes. That still holds true even though the heavy industry is gone , many young professionals have moved  to the area and fixing up and renovating houses as these  as their first home as well. Leslieville is once again becoming a streetcar suburb

Lofts and condos - converted industrial buildings on Carlaw. Some have been completely renovated  the facade of the art deco building while building modern condominiums with in , and others on the street are in the Second Empire style. They are a good choice for a low maintenance lifestyle commuting by streetcar and walking to shopping.   There are also  other former industrial buildings housing lofts and offices. Short transit from downtown shopping close  by. Condo  are  getting popular , so much that new built  buildings are going up along  Carlaw
