Riverdale
Farm History
September
9, 1978 was the official opening of the Riverdale
Farm. It has been a site where the public can visit
and take part in animal related activities.
Originally
the land was owned by John Scadding but was later
bought by the City of Toronto who had the idea of
building Riverdale Park on the land in 1856. In 1894,
the Riverdale Zoo opened at this site and became Toronto's
first zoo. Unfortunately the zoo closed its doors
in 1974 and the animals were all moved to the Toronto
Zoo in Scarborough. For the next four years, many
buildings on the site were removed and the land leveled.
The only buildings left on the property are the Residence,
the Donnybrook, and the Island House.
Today,
Riverdale Farm has seen many changes since 1978
and an increase of farm activities continues to
draw a record number of visitors. |
